Marvel Punishers
This is the only shot I have (circa 1987) of the Official Marvel Paintball team, the Marvel Punishers.
Organized by Carl Potts, this team photo features more people than I remember the last names of. Please help! (l-r):
Front row: Bob Sharen, ?; Dan ...?...; Carl Potts; Hector Collazo; Michael Yee; David Wohl;
Back row: Glen Herdling; Marc Siry; Marcus McLaurin: Fabian Nicieza; John...?...; Mark Chiarello, Steve Buccellato; Janet Jackson; ?.
This is as large as blogger will allow me to display it, unless I chop it up. Let me know if you want me to.

Hah! I have this photo too. Good one.
The "John" is John Wellington. The "Dan" is...at the tip of my tongue...
...Anyway, that was fun. Sort of. This picture was taken on the very first--maybe second--time that the "Marvel Punishers" went out for paintball.
If I remember correctly, the event was partially organized by Hector Collazo and myself, who had played there before. I think we got Carl interested and he kind of took over, and formed the team.
And, I'm sorry to say, that was part of the reason I never played again after this photo was taken. Don't get me wrong--I think Carl is great (if you're reading this, pal, I have nothing but good thoughts where you're concerned!)--but, he was a real control freak.
My memories of playing paintball with Carl include him barking orders to me and some other people. Basically wanting us to be sacrificed so he could move forward. Nobody had actually put him "in charge," so some of us didn't feel like following his commands. I remember him getting upset at us. This kind of took away the fun...at least as far as I was concerned.
I wonder how Carl remembers it.
He was probably strategically correct in hindsight, but I quit the team after that. It was no big loss, though--I was a terrible paintballer. Especially since I couldn't see worth a damn. My glasses kept fogging up under the goggles!
Ahhh...memories....
Thanks, Marcus!
Carl recruited me, so I didn't know about it before that, so apologies to Hector. I do remember the game being moved from the wilderness to on site at Marvel, until an incident with Security put the kibosh on the whole thing.
I do remember sitting there and trying to feel like my life was really in danger, feeling my heart pounding. I think that's part of the thrill of something like that, like a roller coaster showing you what it'd feel like to fall out of a building, only not at all, really. This was my first and last outing, as well.
Carl did do most of the recuiting and organizing of the paintball games. Hector and I were only involved in the "concept,' really. I don't want to take away due credit!
The only thing I didn't like was how serious the game became. I had fun running around the woods shooting at people, and yes, feeling that thrill you described. I guess I'm not much of a team player, because the strict organization that Carl added to the play is what made me lose interest. But I freely admit it is that very organization which helps win games!
Those Punisher shirts were pretty cool, eh?
I still have one of those shirts, even though I was too wimpy to actually go out and get shot in it. It's sitting on the top shelf of my closet right now. Ah, memories...
Any one else still have one of those silver Spiderman satin jackets? Mine has a few rust stains (no idea how), so it's no longer E-bay ready.
Jan and I each have one!
I think I have the black satin jacket. I know I still have the wool football jacket. Even better--I have the Mark Gruenwald-Style red Marvel jumpsuit!!!
AK!
OMG, the jumpsuit! Before my time, but I remember borrowing Elliot Brown's once for a costume party (at least, I think it was his. And that I've remembered his name correctly).
I didn't get the black satin jacket or the wool football jacket...didn't last at Marvel long enough, I'm guessing.
I remember having a shitty gun (a 'ninja nightmare.') It would shoot six balls before having to be laboriously reloaded. To change the gas cartridge, you had to unscrew the whole back of the gun. A friggin' musket would have been better.
Other people had guns that held 250 paintballs and carried around a scuba-like air tank. I got killed a lot.
